SFTP file browser

The SFTP file browser shows this computer and a server side by side, so you can move files between them.

Open a file browser

  • In the sidebar, choose the folder icon next to a host (Browse files (SFTP)).
  • Or, in a session, choose Files in the route bar.

The browser opens in its own tab, marked SFTP, with its own connection. It uses the host's saved sign-in, jump hosts and VPN. Quick connect sessions don't have a file browser.

The two panes

The left pane is This computer, starting in your home folder. The right pane is the server, starting in your home folder there. Each pane shows name, size, modified time and permissions.

  • Double-click a folder to open it. The up arrow goes to the parent folder.
  • Click the path to type one.
  • Select several items with Ctrl-click (Cmd-click on a Mac) or Shift-click, or all of them with Ctrl+A (Cmd+A).
  • Refresh reloads a pane.
  • Keyboard: Backspace goes up, Enter opens the selected folder, Delete deletes the selection on the server.

Transfer files

  • Select items on this computer and choose Upload →, or select items on the server and choose ← Download. They go to the folder open in the other pane.
  • Drag items from one pane to the other, or onto a folder in the other pane.
  • Drag files from your desktop or file manager onto the server pane to upload them.

Folders transfer with everything inside. Links to folders are skipped, and the finished transfer says how many. Each transfer shows its progress, and you can Cancel it. If a file already exists at the destination, the transfer stops and offers Replace.

Manage files on the server

New folder
Available on both sides.
Rename
Renames the one selected item on the server.
Permissions
Sets the mode of the selected item on the server, as three or four octal digits such as 644 or 0755.
Delete
Deletes the selection on the server, including everything inside folders, after you confirm. It can't be undone.

On a narrow window

When the MorphGate window is as narrow as a phone, it switches to a phone layout with a one-folder file browser instead of two panes.
