Session logs

MorphGate can record what a host's sessions print. Recordings are encrypted with the vault's key, synced with the vault, and played back in the app.

Turn recording on

In a host's editor, tick Record sessions into the vault and save. From then on every session to that host is recorded. While it records, the tab has a recording marker and the route bar shows Recording.

MorphGate records the terminal output and size changes, not your keystrokes. Anything the server echoes back, such as the commands you type, is part of the output. A password typed at a hidden prompt is not echoed, so it is not in the recording.

The recording is saved in pieces while the session runs (about every minute), so a crash loses little.

Find and play recordings

Open Session logs at the bottom of the sidebar (it appears once a host records), Session logs… in a host's editor, or Recording in the route bar. Each recording shows when it started, how long it ran, how much it printed, the address, and the device that recorded it.

  • Play opens a player with play, pause and a position slider. Play at 1×, 2×, 4× or 8×. Pauses longer than 2 seconds are shortened.
  • Save .cast saves the recording as an asciinema .cast file in your Downloads folder.
  • Delete removes it, here and, with sync, everywhere.

A recording's state is one of Synced, Uploading, On another device (fetched when you play it) or Not uploaded.

Sync and storage

Recordings sync to servers that store files (morphgate.com and the reference server do). A recording the server refused stays on the device that made it; Try again retries the upload. On morphgate.com, recordings need an active plan, and each account and team has a storage limit.

Recordings in your personal vault are included in the Personal plan.

In a team's vault

Recordings of a host in a team's shared vault are encrypted with that vault's key. Everyone who can open the vault can play them back.

  • On morphgate.com, team recordings are kept on the Business plan (and during a team's trial). On the Team plan, the host editor says so when you turn recording on, and recordings stay on the device that made them. The session logs list shows Upgrade. Once the team is on Business, they upload with the next try.
  • Owners and admins can have the server delete the team's recordings after a number of days: Delete the team's session logs after this many days in the team's policies, in the app. 0 keeps them. A recording whose pieces were deleted says so instead of playing. See Team policies.

The server never sees what a recording contains. It stores encrypted pieces and knows only their size and that they are session logs.
